Who We Serve

Heart of Compassion serves our most vulnerable communities in SC - those living in poverty and hardship. These families struggle to obtain basic non-food household goods - diapers, toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning supplies, soap - necessities most people take for granted. Without these necessities, people have hard decisions to make about how they can live without these items.  For low income families, not being able to meet basic needs causes as much anxiety and stress as food or housing.  It affects the health and well being of the entire family.  And they sink deeper into poverty. Our goal is to provide non-food essentials to these families to ease their stress and anxiety.

Did you know?

Low income families and individuals face the need for basic essentials that are not covered by government assistance. Without these necessities, people miss work and school.  They get sick.  And they sink deeper in poverty.  For these people, not being able to meet basic needs causes as much anxiety and stress as food or housing insecurity. This has devastating consequences on their health and well being. Living in poverty, they are one life event away from financial ruin.

Most people assume that government assistance covers everything someone needs to live.  But that is not true. Government assistance, SNAP specifically, only covers part of what people need to provide for a family’s health and well being.  These are non-food items like soap, shampoo, tooth paste, laundry soap, and hygiene products.  Not to mention toilet paper, paper towels, diapers, and more. Feeding America reports 58% of families in poverty have to cut back on food just to afford these items.

Heart of Compassion works to reduce this instability by providing nonperishable items to people to ease their suffering with kindness and compassion. We are on a mission to be there with items needed to help reduce the stress and anxiety of their situation.  And to provide compassionate support to help break the cycle of poverty.
